Organizational Structure

Through a series of conference calls, in person meetings, and on-line collaborations, the GC3 has established three work groups with short range action plans in the service of the GC3 mission.

The engine of the GC3 is the working groups through which work products in service of the GC3 mission are created. Each working group is headed by two co-chairs who, with Lowell Center staff, facilitate working group discussions. GC3 participants self select to which working group they would like to become involved. Each working group consists of 10–20 participants. Between regular calls, the group communicates by use of a listserv hosted at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and administered by Lowell Center staff. Additional working groups will be created as needed to advance the GC3 mission.

  • Tools for Chemical Assessment and Safer Design
Identifying existing and needed tools, as well as tools in development, and considering creating a database of toxicity information for companies looking to make better chemical choices.
  • Drivers for Innovation and Marketing
Identifying drivers and obstacles to innovation and marketing safer products within industry; promoting a credible third party endorsement system and distinguishing green in the marketplace so consumers can easily identify safe (or safer)/green (or greener) products.

The direction and scope of the GC3 is determined by an Advisory Committee. This committee will be comprised of volunteers through the 2008 GC3 Annual Meeting, at which time an election will be held to fill a specific roster:

  • DfE/Green Chemistry working group chairs (2)
  • Tools for Chemical Assessment working group chairs (2)
  • Drivers and Marketing working group chairs (2)
  • At-Large GC3 Representatives
  • Corporate (2)
  • NGO or government (2)
  • Lowell Center staff (3)

Currently, this Advisory Committee is comprised of the following people:

  • Melissa Coffin, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production
  • Richard Cottrell, Sysco
  • Berkeley Cue, Pfizer (retired)
  • John Frazier, Nike
  • Eric Harrington, True Textiles Inc.
  • Lauren Heine, Lauren Heine LLC

  • Kathleen Shelton, DuPont
  • Tom Swarr, United Technologies (retired)
  • Joel Tickner, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production

Working group chairs will be elected at the discretion of those in the working group by a majority vote of those present. At-large members of the committee are asked to make a one-year commitment and are elected by a majority vote of those present. Corporate members of the advisory committee should represent a broad range of industrial sectors. Lowell Center staff will maintain permanent positions on the committee as GC3 facilitators.
