Standards, Certifications & Labels
At a Glance
The SMaRT© National Consensus Sustainable Product Standard is a third party certification that uses a comprehensive life cycle approach to assess the sustainability of products used in building infrastructures and their interior. Approved products are able to use the SMaRT© label. Health, environmental, and economic impacts are examined from raw materials to end of life. The goal is to provide one standard to assess the impact of building products to humans and the environment. SMaRT© provides training to retailers and purchasers on the value of LCA and sustainable product standards.

The SMaRT© standard uses a life cycle approach to certify products. Companies provide information about their product(s) from raw material to end of life. Information is collected on a scorecard and points are given for various attributes. There are several required areas, such as chemical use, feedstock inventory, recycled or biobased content, environmental policy, and end of life information that total 14 points. For minimum certification, the product must meet enough other requirements to reach a total of 28 points. Larger reductions in energy consumption as well as larger usage of renewable energy, biobased or recycled materials, product reclamation, and reuse will receive more points than small amounts of reductions or use in these categories. Points are also given for innovations in new technology that reduce impacts. The Standard has 4 levels of certification based on number of points achieved: Sustainable 28-40 points, Sustainable Silver 41-60 points, Sustainable Gold 61-89 points, and Sustainable Platinum 90-162 points. SMaRT© also requires the product to have undergone an LCA (life cycle analysis). All SMaRT© certifications go beyond compliance in assessing the sustainability of products.

Companies must provide the following information: supply chain information (the network of suppliers that participate in the sale, delivery and production of a product), emissions from manufacturing and product use, ingredients, raw materials and sourcing, chemical toxicity, energy type and use, recycled / biobased / environmentally preferred content, end-of-life information, company environmental management system, company social practices (labor and community), and new technologies and process that provide innovative solutions.
Cost of Tool
Certification for Sustainable, Silver and Gold levels is $7,500. Certification for Platinum is $10,000.
Certification is good for three years. SMaRT© also performs random audits of a percentage of certified products.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths: The standard provides certification for companies that are innovative in processes or materials that reduce exposures to dangerous materials. This may have the effect of pushing companies to continually improve processes to increase the sustainability of their product.
