She began her career at the Harvard Management Company and later moved to Trillium where she held portfolio manager and research analyst responsibilities for more than a decade. After working in the education field for six years she rejoined Trillium’s shareholder advocacy team in 2006.

Susan serves on The Steering Committee of The Chemical Footprint Project, and previously served on the Boards of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, The Thirty Percent Coalition and Pesticide Action Network, North America.

Boma's focus is on driving safer products to the retail marketplace in order to reduce people’s exposure to toxic chemicals. She also leads EDF’s initiative “Behind the Label: a Blueprint for Safer Chemicals in the Marketplace” that lays out a path to corporate leadership. SHERRI-ANN BURNETT-BOWIE

Sherri-Ann Burnett-Bowie, MD, MPH received her AB cum laude in Biochemical Sciences at Harvard College; her MD at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and her MPH at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Burnett-Bowie completed primary care internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Burnett-Bowie is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and a clinical investigator in the MGH Endocrine Unit, where she is the site principal investigator for the SWAN Study, a multi-site, 24-year longitudinal study of menopause. Promoting diversity and inclusion is her core mission and shapes her educational focus and administrative roles. Dr. Burnett-Bowie is an Associate Director of the MGH Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the Director of Multicultural Affairs for the MGH Department of Medicine.

Chris Cassell was named director of corporate sustainability in January 2017 and is responsible for developing and implementing sustainability strategies across the organization. Chris joined Lowe’s in 2011 and has more than 17 years’ experience in strategy, program management, and process design. Prior to Lowe’s, Chris held positions with Accenture and North Highland. Chris earned a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from George Washington University and a master’s degree in international business from the University of South Carolina.

LYNETTE CHUNG

Lynette Chung is Chief Sustainability Officer of Covestro since July 2020, based at the company’s corporate headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany. In this position, she is responsible for Sustainability and Government Affairs at global level.

Prior to joining Covestro, Lynette was most recently Head of Sustainability Strategy and Advocacy at Clariant, which she joined in 2011. She also has worked in Brussels for many years on EU environmental and trade policies for Eurometaux, the EU non-ferrous metals industry association, and other trade associations.

Lynette is a lawyer by education, born in Sweden and now lives in Germany.

STEVE CRAWFORD

Stephen (Steve) G. Crawford is Senior Vice President, Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer for Eastman Chemical Company. In addition to serving as CTO, Crawford provides executive leadership for Eastman Sustainability, Global Product Stewardship and Regulatory Affairs. He also has direct responsibility for the Asia Pacific and EMEA Technology organizations.

Crawford is a native of Kingsport, Tennessee. He holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Tennessee. Crawford joined Eastman in 1987. He has held several leadership positions of increasing responsibility in both Manufacturing Operations and Technology. Prior to the CTO position, he held positions of Vice- President of R&D for the Advanced Materials group and the Vice-President of R&D for Eastman’s Additives and Functional Products Business group.

Crawford is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Industrial Research Institute. He is on the Board of Directors of both Launch Tennessee (Tennessee Technology Development Corporation) and the Eastman Credit Union. He is also on the University of Tennessee’s Chemical and Bio-molecular Engineering Board of Advisors, as well as UT’s External Advisory Board for Research.

Peter Eckes, PhD, President of BASF Bioscience Research, has over 25 years of experience in the chemical industry.

As President Bioscience Research, Peter Eckes leads BASF’s global competence center for biosciences headquartered in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina. In this role, he drives innovative sustainable solutions for agricultural, food and industrial applications for a better life and improved environment.

Peter joined BASF in 1992, after completing a post-graduate fellowship with Harvard University’s chemistry department. Peter has held multiple roles in BASF in the US and in Germany before he took on the position as the Senior Vice President of Global Research and Development Crop Protection in 2002. Immediately prior to his Bioscience Research responsibility, Peter led BASF Plant Science as President.

SALLY EDWARDS

Dr. Sally Edwards has many years of experience in engaging a wide range of stakeholders to promote the environmental health of communities and develop safer and greener products. She is a senior research associate at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She is a co-founder of the Chemical Footprint Project, which is designed to recognize corporate leadership in the use of safer chemicals. Sally facilitates the work of the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council’s Retailer Leadership Council, whose mission is to promote safer chemicals, materials and products across retail supply chains. Sally holds a MS in Environmental Health Science from Harvard University and a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University. She completed her doctorate in Work Environment at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her book, Beyond Child’s Play: Sustainable Product Design in the Global Doll-Making Industry, was published in 2009.

DAVID ENTWISTLE

David is a synthetic organic chemist who obtained his Ph.D in 1994 under Prof. Steve Ley FRS.  David’s postdoctoral positions with Prof Tomas Hudlicky and Prof. Gerry Pattenden FRS focused on synthetic organic methodologies and total synthesis.

David began his career in 1998 at Pfizer Process Chemistry, UK, working on many early to mid-clinical phase APIs.

In 2012 David joined Codexis, starting in Singapore and then moving to Redwood City, USA where he leads the chemistry department.  He has conceived and had oversight of many diverse enzyme screening and engineering projects across pharma, food and other performance enzyme applications.

JULIE GORTE

Julie Gorte is the Senior Vice President for Sustainable Investing at Impax Asset Management LLC and Pax World Funds. She oversees environmental, social and governance-related research on prospective and current investments as well as the firm’s shareholder engagement and public policy advocacy. Julie is also a member of the Impax Gender Analytics team.

Julie serves on the boards of the Endangered Species Coalition, E4theFuture, Clean Production Action and is the board chair of the Sustainable Investments Institute.

Prior to joining Pax, Julie served as Vice President and Chief Social Investment Strategist at Calvert. Her experience before she joined the investment world in 1999 includes nearly 14 years as Senior Associate and Project Director at the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Vice President for Economic and Environmental Research at The Wilderness Society, Program Manager for Technology Programs in the Environmental Protection Agency’s policy office and Senior Associate at the Northeast-Midwest Institute. EUNICE HEATH

Eunice Heath serves as corporate director for Sustainability. She leads the coordinated planning and implementation of the 2025 Sustainability Goals, as well as sustainability integration and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting disclosure cross the company and business units.

Heath joined Dow in 1991 as part of the Commercial Development Program and has worked in a myriad of Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, Government Affairs and Business Leadership roles throughout her career. In 2013, she assumed a role in corporate sustainability, which included responsibilities for Dow 2025 circular economy implementation and liaison to external organizations such as The Sustainability Consortium, Green Chemistry Commerce Council and American Chemistry Council Value Chain and Retail Committees.

She is a certified Six Sigma Green Belt, a recipient of the 2007 Black Engineer of the Year Award, 2011 Women of Distinction winner by the Philadelphia Business Journal, 2013 Champion of Champions award by NSBE, 2017 Honoree of Forty Women to Watch Over 40 by Forbes Media and a 2020 Honoree of 25 Women Shaking Up the Climate Movement by GreenBiz.

JIM JONES

Currently Jim is President of JJonesEnvironmental, a consulting firm that provides strategic advice to clients on issues related to chemical safety. Jim was Executive Vice President of Strategic Alliances & Industry Relations at the Household and Commercial Products Association from July 2017 until January 2020. In that capacity he focused on expanding and strengthening the association’s relationships with industry, NGOs, retailers and all levels of government, while also increasing sustainability efforts in the consumer, industrial and institutional specialty chemicals industry. Jim held various management positions focused on chemicals, toxics, and pesticides during his 30- year career at EPA. As the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, he was responsible for implementing the nation’s pesticide, toxic substances, and pollution prevention laws. Jim earned an M.A. in Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland.

Lisa LeBlanc, Director of Quality & Compliance at UPPAbaby is a seasoned materials veteran with extensive knowledge of textiles and apparel from manufacturing, quality and testing perspectives. Sydney Lindquist is Hexion Inc.’s Global Sustainability Leader. Sydney is responsible for developing and implementing the Company’s sustainability strategy, including leading engagement efforts with key stakeholders across several market segments globally. She began her career with Hexion in 2004.

Sydney is a strong advocate for a balanced approach to sustainability across all stakeholder groups, and the Company’s representative on numerous standard development and specification organizations, such as ASTM and NAHB, USGBC and sits on the Green Building Initiative’s Executive Board of Directors and chairs the ACC’s Building and Construction Subcommittee.

Julie B. Manley, CHMM, LEED AP O+M, is Director of the GC3 Green & Bio-Based Startup Network and Principal of Guiding Green LLC, a consulting firm focused on meeting business needs by designing for sustainability.  She builds on her 20⁺ years of industry and consulting experience to help integrate sustainable solutions into the marketplace through program management, strategic alliance building, and technical services.  Her consulting experience spans a wide spectrum of products including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, cleaning products, adhesives, personal care products, dust suppressants, flooring, and oil & gas. Prior to founding Guiding Green LLC, Julie held various positions at Abbott Laboratories in the manufacturing and environmental, health & safety organizations including manufacturing optimization, EHS regulatory compliance, and global environmental performance improvement.  Julie earned a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Science from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  She is currently Vice President and Education Chair of the Michigan Chapter of the Association of Hazardous Materials Professionals, and is an invited speaker and author on subjects including sustainability, green chemistry, circular economy, and collaborations.

ALEXANDRA MCPHERSON

Alexandra McPherson, Principal, Niagara Share. Ms. McPherson has spent the last twenty years scaling environmental solutions through the development of new organizations, projects and partnerships. She co-leads the Collaborative for the Regenerative Economy (CoRE) with the University at Buffalo's Materials Design and Innovation Department and Clean Production Action (CPA). CoRE is investing in a new multi-million dollar material innovation, and clean production program for clean energy technologies. Ms McPherson manages the Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN), a membership-based investor collaborative, based at CPA. Through IEHN, she promotes market development of safer chemicals to enhance shareholder value, public health, and the environment. Prior to her work at Niagara Share, Ms. McPherson launched and co-founded Clean Production Action. There, she assembled a world-class team to deliver environmental tools and services to major corporations, governments and nonprofits worldwide, including Apple, Dell, HP, Kaiser Permanente, the European Union, and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

GREG MONTELLO

Head of Product Chemistry for New Balance Athletics, Inc., a global footwear, apparel and equipment brand. Leading a global team of nine associates, product chemistry consists of RSL implementation, product safety and sustainability. Currently, duties include the development, global deployment, and oversight of New Balance’s Restricted Substance Manual (RSM) for all New Balance product lines, review and approve chemical technology applications used for footwear and apparel (DWR, antimicrobials, adhesives, etc.). Served as Chair of the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) Environmental Committee. Brand Advisory member of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Program, Committee chair for the Apparel, Footwear, International RSL Management working group (AFIRM) and advisor of the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3).

Greg studied Environmental Toxicology as an undergrad at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and pursued studies at the University of Oregon in Environmental Policy as a grad student. In his “spare” time, Greg also helps NB develop product as a footwear and apparel tester, in which he has run three Marathons, five 200 mile relay races, many 5Ks and completed endless weight training sessions and played countless hours of tennis and basketball testing various types of athletic footwear and apparel in his 10 years of working for NB.

Currently, Borre is Global Digital Productline Leader for Cargill. Borre is leading the integrations on how transactions of tomorrow will operate in today’s businesses leveraging emerging technologies. One of the pillars in his portfolio is focussed on Sustainability Risk Management, proactively focussing on sustainable supply chains for existing product lines.

Borre joined Cargill in 2016 and has worked in a myriad of technology, business process, data & analytics and business group leadership roles through his career. At the beginning of 2020, he assumed the role in Cargill Horizons, which is set on establishing new product lines of digital business and transformation in the commercial landscape of the food industry.

ARLAN PETERS

Arlan Peters is the Head of Sustainability for Novozymes North America where he develops Novoyzmes’ regional sustainability initiatives, builds organizational capacity, manages Novozymes’ corporate citizenship programs, and engages with external stakeholders on issues relating to life-cycle impacts of biotechnology.

He has represented Novozymes in several organizations including the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, and the Sustainability Consortium where he served as co-chair for TSC’s Corporate Advisory Council.

He holds a BA in Biology from Oberlin College and was a recipient of the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to study economic and environmental impacts of aquaculture in Latin America and Asia. He received his MBA from UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School where he concentrated in Sustainable Enterprise.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

KARL REID

Dr. Karl W. Reid was named executive director of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) on June 2, 2014, marking his return to the organization that gave him his first major leadership experience, 32 years earlier. For the past 22 years, he’s been a leading advocate for increasing college access, opportunity and success for low-income and minority youth.

Dr. Reid came to NSBE from the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), where he oversaw new program development, research and capacity building for the organization’s 37 historically black colleges and universities and held the title of senior vice president for research, innovation and member college engagement. Before his service at UNCF, he worked in positions of progressive responsibility to increase diversity at his alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which he left as associate dean of undergraduate education and director of the Office of Minority Education. While working at MIT as Director of Engineering Outreach Programs, Dr. Reid earned his Doctor of Education degree at Harvard University. His dissertation explored the interrelationship of race, identity and academic achievement. He is the author of Working Smarter, Not Just Harder: Three Sensible Strategies for Succeeding in College…and Life.

Dr. Reid is now supporting NSBE’s National Executive Board and the Society’s 25,000 active members in reaching the main goal of NSBE’s 10-year Strategic Plan: to end the underrepresentation of blacks in engineering in the U.S. by annually producing 10,000 black engineers in the country, by 2025.

RACHEL SIMON

Rachel works with GC3 brands, formulators, and chemical manufacturers to help enable the identification and implementation of green chemistry solutions along the value chain. She also serves as a senior research associate at the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, working on advancing alternatives assessment as a strategy to mainstream green chemistry and manages the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment (A4), a professional society dedicated to promoting development in the fields of alternatives assessment and informed substitution. Rachel holds a MS in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley, where she also worked with industries as a sustainable engineering researcher, focusing on the environmental and human health impacts of materials and techniques to integrate chemical hazard assessment data into Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

BOB SKOGLUND

Dr. Robert Skoglund is the Head of Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs for Covestro LLC, a world-leading manufacturer of high-tech polymer materials where he is responsible for Hazard Communication. In addition he holds an adjunct faculty appointment in the Schools of Public Health at Indiana University and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Skoglund received his MS in toxicology and PhD in environmental chemistry from the University of Minnesota and is working on an MBA in sustainable business at Marylhurst University. In addition he is certified in toxicology by the American Board of Toxicology and industrial hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

BRIAN CHOL SOO STANDEN

Brian is a technology executive with 20+ years of experience in digital transformation and innovation. Brian’s passion lies in developing technologies at the intersection of science, information and business. As Global Head of Next Generation Computing and Senior Manager, Digitalization in Materials and Chemicals R&D North America at BASF, Brian is responsible for strengthening BASF’s digital capabilities in Next Generation Computing areas such as quantum computing as well as enabling the continuous advancement of science and products through the services and products of the segment Digitalization of R&D. He is currently focused on the role of future technology which will transform our ability to understand the business and R&D of BASF along with important elements of digital transformation such as new ways of working, empowerment and agility. JAKE SWENSON

Jake Swenson is the Director of Sustainability for Staples, where he leads all sustainability-related programs for the company. Important areas of focus for Jake are ensuring customers can easily find and shop for a wide array of sustainable products and helping Staples' business customers implement sustainable procurement programs and manage progress against those programs. He leads implementation of Staples sustainability policies, goal setting, and reporting. He also manages Staples’ electronics recycling programs and all stakeholder engagement related to environmental topics. Jake has worked for Staples for 15 years in corporate responsibility and sustainability. Prior to joining Staples, Jake worked in environmental consulting, where he focused on environmental policy analysis and program management for federal agencies, including U.S. EPA.  Jake is a dual MBA/MS graduate of the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan. He received his BA in Politics from Princeton University. Jake lives in Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters.

JOEL TICKNER

Dr. Joel Tickner is a Professor of Public Health  at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He is founder and Executive Director of the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3); Executive Director of the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment (A4), a new professional association; and Co-Director of the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI).  He is a leading expert on application of green chemistry and alternatives assessment in science and policy. He has served on a number of EPA and National Academy of Sciences advisory committees and advises government agencies around the world. He holds a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and a Doctor of Science Degree from the Department of Work Environment at University of Massachusetts Lowell.

MARTIN VOLLMER

In 2010, Martin Vollmer joined Clariant International Ltd. as Chief Technology Officer and Head of Group Technology & Innovation. He is based in Pratteln, Switzerland, and is responsible for Clariant’s Research & Development, Engineering, IP Management, as well as Clariant’s Business Incubator and Innovation Excellence.

Prior to this he held various management positions in Research & Development, Marketing, Business Development and Corporate Development at Bayer AG and Bayer MaterialScience AG, based in Leverkusen, Germany, from 1999 until 2009.

He graduated with a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 1996. Following this, he took a postdoctoral research position in the Department of Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, USA, from 1997 – 1998.

MARTIN WOLF

Mr. Wolf is responsible for ensuring the design of sustainable products at Seventh Generation, Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of ecological household and personal care products. He is also responsible for creating a more sustainable business model, and for creating more sustainable systems of commerce.

Mr. Wolf brings over 40 years of experience in industrial and environmental chemistry to his work, starting with environmental fate and metabolism studies for agricultural chemicals, followed by studies of the occurrence of hazardous chemicals in the environment, conducting life cycle studies of product systems, and designing more sustainable household cleaning products.

Working at Seventh Generation, Mr. Wolf has developed frameworks for environmental product design, helped educate his coworkers, customers, and consumers about the environmental impacts of consumer products and the industries that produce them, successfully lobbied for passage of phosphate bans in a number of states, helped develop standards for voluntary ingredient disclosure, and brought change to the cleaning products industry through more sustainable product designs.
