CleanGredients® is an online database of chemical ingredients used primarily to formulate residential, institutional, industrial and janitorial cleaning products that meet EPA Safer Choice criteria for environmental and human health performance. The database helps formulators identify ingredients with preferable human health and safety attributes and helps suppliers showcase chemicals with these attributes. Retailers can work with their suppliers to encourage use of these ingredients.

Description

GreenBlue develops requirements for environmental and human health performance for cleaning product ingredients, through a consensus-based stakeholder process, in collaboration with the U.S. EPA's Design for Environment (DfE) Program. Stakeholders include government entities, environmental organizations, industry associations, cleaning product formulators and distributors, and chemical manufacturers and suppliers. CleanGredients is a database of chemical ingredients whose formulations have been pre-approved by the U.S. EPA to meet the criteria of its Safer Choice Standard.

Two independent organizations (NSF International and ToxServices) serve as third-party reviewers to evaluate manufacturers' ingredients and provide verified information on standard physical and chemical properties as well as relevant environmental and human health attributes. 

Requirements

Suppliers must provide ingredient information to a third party for evaluation. This includes full information on all ingredients of the product that are intentionally added or present above a certain threshold, company-derived toxicological and fate data, and ingredient biodegradability information.

Cost

Supplier Subscription: includes access to the CleanGredients database and an unlimited number of product listings within any single category. Annual subscription fees for suppliers are based on the gross annual revenue for the company or the manufacturing division of the product being listed in CleanGredients. These fees can range from $1,500 to $4,500 per year.

Formulator Subscription: allows annual access to the CleanGredients database. Annual subscription fees for formulators are also based on the company’s gross annual revenue. These fees can range from $250 to $750 per year.
