Building Materials & Products

The Health Product Declaration® (HPD) is a standard format for accurate and consistent reporting of material contents and potential health hazards of building materials and products. The HPD is used to meet the needs of customers for information on product content and associated health information related to individual building products and materials. The HPD® Open Standard provides authoritative guidance on how to properly prepare a HPD. In addition to written guidance, the HPD® Open Standard includes a template for providing requested information.

The HPD Collaborative updated its HPD® Open Standard to Version 2.0 in September 2015. The new and improved version was created by a collaborative effort of participants from various sectors of the building industry. In January 2016, the HPD Collaborative introduced the HPD Builder™ 2.0, a web-based application that can be used to create, publish and manage HPDs. It is consistent with Version 2.0 of the Standard requirements and utilizes the Pharos Chemical and Materials library and GreenScreen® information.

Description

The HPD® Open Standard provides for the disclosure of product contents and potential related human and environmental health hazards. These hazard associations are based on the HPD Priority Hazard Lists, the GreenScreen® List Translator, and full GreenScreen® assessments when available. The HPD® Open Standard includes two major components: the HPD Format, a structural framework for the demonstration of data elements required for a HPD; and the HPD Instructions, which define the terms and requirements for the data elements included in the Standard Format.

There are two key objectives to the updated version 2.0: to increase usability by both users and creators of Health Product Declarations and synchronize the HPD® Open Standard specification with other standards and certifications used in the building industry that also are associated with the reporting of product components and health information. Version 2.0 allows for more complex issues of disclosure and supply chain structure to be addressed, which will help to improve the usability of the HPD. Harmonization allows the HPD® Open Standard to fulfill the data entry requirements for several other standards and certifications. It also creates a strong foundation for manufacturers to improve material health by conducting chemical assessments in order to create safer products.

More detailed information about the Health Product Declaration® Open Standard Version 2.0 can be found here.
